National Velvet

Lydia Blakeley

Alessandro Albanese gallery in collaboration with Albanese Arte gallery presents the solo exhibition of the English artist Lydia Blakely entitled "National Velvet". Through this latest production for her first Italian solo exhibition, 16 works will be presented that will set up the spaces of the gallery.

The title of the exhibition chosen by the artist is a clear reference to the Oscar-winning film National Velvet of 1946, set in the England of the '20s, starring the actress Liz Taylor (Velvet) who, after winning after a city lottery the crazy horse Pie, decided to train it and enter it for a Grand Prix. The newspaper of the Grand Prix, Velvet, not finding a jockey, disguises herself as a man and participates in the race, coming in first place. When the judges discover her true identity, the young girl is disqualified, but by then she and Pie have acquired notoriety and international fame.
