Burners

Alessandro Albanese Gallery is pleased to present Burners, a solo exhibition by Toby Christian.

This large-scale installation includes a series of new marble sculptures created by the artist during the Matera Residency art residency held in July at the city of Matera. Alluding to a temporary, untraceable throwaway of mobile phone devices, the exhibition's title echoes the double entendres of innovation and redundancy that pervade the show. Toby Christian's multifaceted practice encompasses a wide range of media, including writing, installation, sculpture, painting, and animation. Using text within an expanded sculptural field, he writes in an attempt to describe objects he sees, visits, and collects - from rare museological artifacts to more everyday disposable objects. Sculptures and wall works are episodically produced, made in relation to and stemming from his ongoing writing.
